Thanksgiving Southern Style

Happy Thanksgiving To One And All!

We are getting very close to Thanksgiving and I thought I would share my article Thanksgiving Southern Style that I wrote and published on my page of articles at Squidoo.com with you all. Incidentally, this article made it to the front page of Squidoo.com AND is one of the featured articles in their Thanksgiving Zine! Loads of Thanksgiving goodness in that zine so you might wanna check it out! My article is loaded with recipes that are guaranteed to have you drooling before you are finished reading. :)

Sometimes I have to take a break from creating art in order to get a more objective view and now I find myself in that place. Writing about art and other creative subjects is a different creative outlet that I am enjoying at the moment. I'll share some of my articles with you here occasionally. I'm sure I'll be back to painting and sharing soon.

A Southern Style Holiday

The smell of turkey roasting in the oven, vegetables simmering and sweet potatoes swimming in butter and brown sugar; nothing can beat a Thanksgiving southern style! Being raised in the deep south of USA, I must say that we did put on some pretty tasty holiday spreads. Not many things would bring out the best recipes in our family as a holiday would. The only thing that would bring out more great southern recipes was if we had a visiting preacher over for dinner, but I'll save those recipes for another article.

Most holidays we would gather at my Grandparent's home that lived just a few miles from where we lived in our very small North Eastern Mississippi town. Of course, this also meant that at least one family of relatives would travel from a few states over and would bring their best recipes with them. We couldn't wait to enjoy it all! I thought I'd share a sampling of what a typical southern Thanksgiving meal might include.

Not What She Expected Mixed Media Painting on Text by Itaya

In my last post I shared that I had been experimenting with creating art on the pages from books. I thought I would share one of those paintings with you today. Lynne Hoppe has been an inspiration to me for a while now and so has the artist and illustrator Tina Berning. Both artists have very interesting styles and I've learned so much by following along with them while experimenting with drawing and painting women's faces.

So far, I've used the pages I received from Brian on Etsy that makes a storage place for your valuables out of books among other wonderful gadgets. Being a huge lover of old books, it is not always easy for me to dismantle a book. Using pages cut out of old books by someone else seemed like an easier way for me to start with my art projects. I have since found some old books that I 'may' be able to harvest the pages from to create art with.

The biggest challenge for me with drawing and painting on pages of text is learning to focus on the project and not the words that are peeking through. It is my hope that with more practice the process will become easier. I do love the effect of paintings on text. I've also experimented with painting on tea bags and brown paper. I'll be sharing some of those soon!

Stacks of Old Books and Covers

Inspired by Seth Apter at The Altered Page, I decided to post a few images of one of my favorite stacks. I love old books. I love the covers as well as the insides. Not sure which I love more, the insides or the covers! I love the old and yellowing pages, the cracked bindings, the markings inside...yeup, I love it all.

What will I do with all these old books and covers? I'll probably use the insides eventually in my mixed media art projects and the covers to make art journals. But for now, I think I'll just enjoy looking at them a while longer as they are. :)

Soon, I'll be posting some artwork created on book pages so watch for that. It's a whole new adventure for me and I'm looking forward to sharing these art pieces with you all!

Reckless Heart Abstract Expressionist Painting by Itaya

I created this painting from paper that over time I had added many layers of paint. Once I felt it had enough layers on it, I painted the heart in the center. It just seemed to work that a heart would go in the midst of all the layers of creativity.

Reckless Heart is painted in an abstract expressionist style created on heavily primed brown paper. I love how the many colors dance around the heart as if to show all the places it has bumped into during it's lifetime. I think this heart has been a very reckless one and has loved with abandon and has all the marks and colors to show it. Somehow it still looks beautiful to me even with all it's scars.

Good Morning Abstract Landscape Painting by Itaya Lightbourne

I'm making great headway on painting the garage and trim on the house. For awhile it was slow going because of the rainy weather and now I'm having to stay inside because of the heat. Hopefully it will be cooler in the next few days so that I can get more done. I know that in most parts of the U.S. it's not cooler until autumn is well under way. But in the Pacific NW, it can be cooler one day and blistering the next!

Dave and Trudy are very fortunate to have a summer home located by the Pacific Ocean. They know that not everyone has such a colorful and peaceful place to call home during the spring and summer months and they spend every moment of every day enjoying it. Their little bungalow is situated so that they get to enjoy the rising sun over the water each morning. They leave the curtains and windows open so they can awaken to brilliant colors and the sound of waves gently slapping against the shoreline. In the evenings they slip down to the beach to go for a quick dip to cool off from the day's heat and to gather seashells to take home to their grand kids in the fall.

Last Thoughts Original Abstract Landscape Painting by Itaya Lightbourne

I've managed to work on my paintings in between painting the house and doing my usual chores and have a few completed. I thought I'd share this one with you this evening. This painting is another from the Big Sky series with little farm houses in them. Not sure why this theme has captivated me so. Perhaps it is my enjoyment of simple pleasures such as colorful skies and the beauty of nature in general. I suppose I'll continue to create these paintings until the inspiration runs out.

George and Ethel live in this lovely little farm house out in the middle of nowhere with their three kids and two dogs. They all love the wide open spaces and there are no busy streets to worry about the kids running out into. This particular evening the sky is a brilliant pink with lots of purple, blue, gold and deep red. Everyone is out on the front porch oohing and ahhhing over the changing colors.

Summertime always brings a flurry of projects around our home. This year we're concentrating on painting projects and a bit of remodeling. Of course, this does cut into my creative time! Please be patient with my posts and know that I'll post as soon as I can mostly during rainy days.

Today's painting is from my Big Sky series. It is of a tiny little farm house sitting on the banks of a river against the massive fluffy cloud filled sky. Tom and Harriett love their cozy little home and the incredible sunrises and sunsets they get to be a part of each day. They are surrounded by nature and the river offers up some mighty good fishing. Harriett keeps a few chickens and loves to putter in her garden. Tom sneaks away as often as possible to sit on the river banks and enjoy the sounds of nature.

Red Sky At Night Original Abstract Landscape Painting by Artist Itaya

Another Big Sky landscape painting for you to enjoy! This one is filled with bright color even though the shades are towards the evening side of the day.

A little house sits near a pond and is surrounded by brilliant orange red skies above. The sweet couple (Emma and Bert) that live in this cozy little home are a very down to earth pair and like taking life at a much slower pace these days. It's been said that they have retired from the busy life they once lived in the city some miles away to this quiet little slice of heaven in the countryside. They love to take long walks observing nature and always carry along their camera to capture beautiful photos to share with friends and family. During the spring and summer months they enjoy sitting on the banks of their pond with their cane fishing poles to see what they can catch for dinner. A photo of this fantastic sky with it's reds, oranges and blues is definitely going to be placed on their family blog for all to enjoy! :)

Glorious An Original Big Sky Landscape Painting By Itaya

This little painting was started two years ago and set aside until I could decide what direction to go with it. Basically, I laid down several colors of paint in a very abstract expressionist manner to see if anything would leap out at me once done. It didn't. It is one of the few paintings that I have painted that just did NOT set well with me. So I took this little painting out and set to work on it a few days ago to see if a landscape would emerge and this time the painting worked!

Sometimes you just have to hold your head a certain angle and cross your eyes before the true painting will come out for all to see. :) So what do you think?

Our overcast and rainy weather is back for the time being so I thought I'd use this time to finish a couple of paintings and share one of them with you. The painting today is another from the Big Sky series and yes, it's raining in this one as well. :) The next one I list will probably NOT have rain in it but will be from the Big Sky series.

I wanted to reflect in this painting the bountiful blessings that come forth this time of the year in the Pacific NW. Although it may rain quite a bit in the springtime, it's all worth it when the skies clear and the sun pops out to reveal beautiful colors all around! I also added a little farmer who is checking on things after the big rain just passed through. He wants to make sure his crops are doing just fine and he is very grateful for his many blessings in his corner of the world.

I hope everyone that celebrates Easter had as wonderful a day as possible with their loved ones! We had a fantastic time visiting with family in West Seattle. During our visit we all visited a nearby park to watch the nieces and nephews have an Easter Egg hunt. While there, we were treated to a spectacular view of Downtown Seattle across the water. The sky was cloudy and stormy looking as it can be here without any rain. At least the rain held off during the Easter Egg hunt!

Another painting that reminds me of spring! I'm generally an autumn and winter person but for some reason I'm very glad to see little flowers springing up all around me this year. I love the bright green buds on the trees and the fruit trees that have already burst into bloom as well. The spring time color pallet is so refreshing!

Many Blessings To Japan

It is beyond our comprehension, those of us that live far from your challenges, as to how you all can deal with all that you are faced with at this time. My prayers and love go out to each and every one that is finding themselves with their world changed forever.

A friend shared an email from a friend of a friend that lives in Japan. This lady was reaching out to all those that know her and letting them know she is doing well. She said that she is amazed at how kind everyone is being to one another in her area as they pull together and pool their resources. She said there is no looting or pushing in lines as they wait to receive food and water. She said they haven't been able to bathe for several days but that doesn't seem to matter so much as the closeness they are experiencing with each other.

Hopefully this is true of most of the areas that have been affected and that everyone is pulling together to help each other. My thoughts and prayers are with you as are they from so many here in the United States. May each day grow brighter and brighter as you work to put your worlds back together again.

Indication - a few meanings: to hint at, given a clue, to be representative of, a symbol. I feel that all of these meanings apply to this little painting. To me, it hints at a landscape that is perhaps in a hidden and magical place. It symbolizes a cherished space that one can escape to and represents a treasured space in Mother Nature.

I Will Revere

What is there in your world that you revere? Could it be you revere your piece of Mother Nature, whether she is on your patio, balcony or in your yard? Perhaps you revere the simplicity that you have cultivated in your life. Or maybe you revere the precious moments of peace and quiet when all is well in the silence.

I revere trees and pretty much all of nature. Nature has always been a place of solace and rejuvenation for me and I feel it is very important we preserve as much nature as possible for the good of people kind and our planet. Having time alone and the space to be creative in is also something I highly revere.

Many people in the world are having their mettle tested these days. Each person seems to be going through their personal forging process. Whether they are in the midst of harsher than normal weather conditions, changes in their financial situation, or perhaps a spiritual crisis, each of us has had or is in the middle of some kind of reckoning. I hope that with the New Year you are finding your personal challenge(s) easing off and going much smoother for a change.

My artwork and creativity are my refuge and my solace no matter what challenges I may find myself in the midst of. Does your artwork or creative pursuits help you in your challenging times? What do you find yourself turning to and what creative tools are there to comfort you while the storms rage around you in the outside world?

Who Do You Create For?

I was visiting the blog of the talented writer Terresa Wellborn where she asks the question "Who do you write for?" After reading some of the responses, I started applying this question to my painting and artwork.

For whom do I create and paint exactly? Is it for myself first and then if I deem it worthy I share it with the public? Or do I ultimately paint and create with the idea in mind that 'this one' might appeal to others and hopefully someone will purchase it? I think it is probably a mixture of both.

I love learning and stretching myself with my artwork. Often times while I am experimenting, I'll stumble upon something new and different from my usual style that I'd like to play with. Then I will dare to share it with a few others. Once I get some feedback and if it is positive, I will then usually share it with everyone. So I ultimately create first for me and the pure joy of doing so and then I must share that joy with others!

If I create only with the idea in mind that I must create to sell something, then I find it becomes a chore. So I must shift my thinking and get back to creating for the pure joy of it or I will become blocked! Have you ever found this to be true for you?

Here is another whimsical painting with my Inktense Watercolor Pencils. This little guy seems to be thinking about springtime and enjoying warmer temps than we've been having. We also got more snow this evening! About 6 inches or so and it fell very quickly. Lots of snow in the Pacific NW this year.

New Year Beginnings

Hello Everyone!

I do hope this shiny New Year of 2011 finds you feeling very well and prosperous! I'm recovering from a flu bug my husband and I picked up over the Christmas holidays. Hopefully I'll be all better and up to speed very soon!

While recovering, I've been playing with the set of Derwent Inktense Watercolor Pencils I received as a Christmas present! Yayyyyy!!

I can't say enough good things about these pencils. They are just fabulous. After reading some wonderful reviews from other artists, I decided to put them on my wish list to Santa. Santa must have thought I was a good girl as low and behold I received some to play with! My set has 24 pencils and it looks like they are going to last a very long time. I'm sure I'll be ordering some other colors to round out this set in the very near future. The colors are very intense and a little bit goes a long way!

The application technique I prefer is to use a dampened brush that came with the set and then brushing the color from the pencil versus coloring directly on the paper and then wetting to disperse. You can use them either way, I just prefer the smoother application of brush on pencil. When I used the pencil on the paper and then applied water to that, there seemed to be a few pencil marks that wouldn't smooth out. Perhaps it is just that I am still new to using watercolor pencils and with experience I'll get better with coloring first and then dispersing with water and brush. Here are a few paintings that I've experimented with.

I think my next experiments will be on slightly heavier watercolor paper as this paper wasn't as heavy as I'm used to working with and caused a few waves. Hopefully some gesso on the backside will help smooth out the paper.

Which Do You Prefer, Large Or Small?

I thought I would pose a similar question to my readers as the one Martha asked in her last post. When choosing artwork, which do you find yourself drawn to, large or smaller works? Forget about the price factor for a moment and just think about what really draws you. Do you find yourself wanting to go as large or larger than life when considering which pieces to collect? Or do you instead lean toward smaller and more intimate pieces of artwork?

When painting, I tend to prefer to create small and more intimate pieces. Most of the time when I paint larger it is a result of a commission or because I am actually nudging myself to go larger with my creative expressions. I do love seeing a room with a HUGE piece of artwork hung in a space that draws your eye as you walk into the room. But then, one can also be drawn to a space to look closer when there are several smaller works in a grouping just as well. I know that ultimately it depends on personal preference and possibly what your particular space dictates.

I'd love to hear what your preferences are when choosing your favorite pieces of art...Large or small. :)

Acceptance Art Journal Spread

So I started out with this drawing and watercolor of Clarissa who of course is supposed to represent me.

My theme for this healing heart entry is about Acceptance. It has been a recurring theme in my life and I thought it very appropriate to include it in this Healing Art assignment. :)

Hello All,
I've wanted to start an Art Journal for quite some time and I am finally starting one! I even made my very first Art Journal myself!! Another thing I've wanted to learn to do is how to bind a book or journal so now I'm taking care of two birds with one project. My first entry was inspired by Tamara Laporte http://www.willowing.org/artjournals-w.html and her Willowing site. She also has a Ning site where you will find two free videos and some PDF docs to help get you started. Tamara spends quite a bit of time layering her artwork and helps you to understand about facial structure and layering of color to create skin tone and shadowing. I didn't realize how popular Art Journaling is until I started researching and visiting so many wonderful Art blogs. There are as many styles of Art Journaling as their are Artists apparently. There are no set rules. I think that is one of the reasons it appeals to me so much! I get to make up my own rules and have it evolve into any style I like. I've never worked at profile drawings and artwork as much as I did for this project. Since it was a first for me, I started out on lighter weight sketching paper versus watercolor paper. There are some rough spots in this little piece of artwork but I think she turned out ok. :) I've named her Clarissa and here is my first Art Journal entry -

I wasn't able to make Clarissa as whimsical and carefree as Tamara does in her artwork but perhaps in time I'll loosen up a bit. Those that are familiar with my artwork know that I primarily focus my creative abilities on nature and landscapes. Stepping outside my creative comfort zone is a challenge that helps me to stretch as an artist and hopefully grow. I enjoyed this exercise so much, I think I'm going to do another colorful lady. :) I'll keep you posted!

Most that know me know how much of an Autumn person I am. I have enjoyed our cooler than usual summer this year in the Pacific NW as it was great to go walking and exercising in.

Art Show Was A Success!

Thank you to all the supporters of my art work that came to the Art Feature at the Downtown Bremerton Library last evening! Lots of friends, family, and art patrons came by to view my art. It was such an honor to hear so many lovely comments from people I've never met before. Very humbling indeed. As far as I know, the longest commute to get there was about 1 and 1/2 hours! I am floating on cloud nine today with the success of the show. The art show bug has definitely bitten me and I'll be seriously looking for art shows to be featured in or part of in the near future! I'll keep you posted.

Three paintings and several greeting cards of my artwork flew out the door and to their new homes. Parting was bitter sweet, but I was very happy to meet their new owners and to know they were going to be truly appreciated. I put so much time and energy into the creation of my paintings it is almost as if they are my children. We all know that we must let our 'children' fly from the nest and to their new homes eventually. So off they flew and I am so proud of them. :)

For some reason, the lighting outside isn't wanting to cooperate! My goal is to one day have a setup like several artists and creatives have so that they have a specified corner and equipment ready to take photos of their artwork anytime they need to. In the meantime, I'll just keep taking photos outside and working to get the lighting as near the original once I upload to my computer.

September Art Walk Featuring Itaya's Paintings

I'd love to invite everyone to come to the art walk on September 3rd and at the Bremerton, WA downtown Library. My artwork will be featured that evening. The event is from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm and refreshments will be served. The library is located at 612 5th Street N. and their phone number is 360-377-3955. You can visit their site at http://krl.org/index.php/about-the-library and on the right hand side of the page you can click on directions. The library is in an art deco style building that was built in 1938 and remodeled in the past few years. I'm really proud of this library and very glad the funds came through to remodel it and keep it open.

I've been working like mad getting all the details in order and had no idea just how many details go into getting ready for such a wonderful event! I'm still finishing up some of the paintings that I'll be showing and waiting on the arrival of several greeting cards I ordered of my artwork to show up in the mail. Some of my paintings need to be matted and I'm learning how to do that. I want everything to look fantastic for everyone to enjoy!

Thought I better post a little painting for you all to view while I'm working on some of my bigger art projects. I'm also taking advantage of the beautiful summer weather we've been having and refinishing the massive deck we have in back of our home. So I've been painting outside as well as inside. Hello everyone and Happy Fourth Of July to all my friends and family in the United States! Sorry I've been away so much lately. We've been working on several projects around the home place and will be busy doing that for most of the summer. Plus painting projects, commissions, and getting ready for an art showing in September! I'll keep you posted on the latter as I go. :)

I just love placing in competitions! Don't you? To me, it is very validating that what I'm creating others must be enjoying it. I don't know how many votes my painting received but I did place in the Top Ten and that is wonderful to me! :)

Are You A Perfectionist With Your Creativity?

I often wonder if it's just me or are there a whole lot of us creative perfectionists out there? When I start a new creative venture, many times I'll mentally process it to pieces before finally launching whatever it is I'm working on. There is an article on Artists Who Thrive - 'Perfectionism Kills Creativity' that talks about this very thing. Many times I have to just hold my nose and jump right in and to heck with the consequences. Why do we do this to ourselves? So what if we mess up?! Who started the rule that said we have to get it right the first time? I'm thinking perhaps we need to be gentler with ourselves and just enjoy the process of being creative. What are your thoughts? Do you have to deal with artistic perfectionism? I'd love to hear from you and how you deal with it!

Contest Winner And Another Painting Morning Lessons

So although no one posted here on my blog with their suggestions for a title of the painting I featured in my last post and contest, I still got some great suggestions via email! Although it was a tough decision, I believe I'm going with one of the suggestions from Cody in TX who suggested "Morning Lessons" - cause the little one looks like its going to try to fly for the first time." I do love it when someone else gives me a fresh perspective on my paintings. Now that he has pointed this out about the little one learning to fly, that is all I can see. :) So this little painting is now titled "Morning Lessons".

Happy Little Tree

In honor of spring and Bob Ross who passed on in 1995, I've named this painting 'Happy Little Tree'. It doesn't look like a Bob Ross tree but he did use the word 'happy' quite a bit didn't he? I still love watching his PBS shows. If I ever need to be calm from a hectic day, I can simply watch one of his shows. I'm so glad he left so many painting shows behind for us to remember him by as I don't think I'll ever tire of watching him paint. I'd like to think that Bob is still painting 'happy little trees' and 'happy little clouds' in a place that has lots of the little critters he loved so much and where he himself is very 'happy'. He influenced me and I'm sure many other artists over the years greatly with his style of painting that declared you don't mess up when painting - you have happy little accidents. How freeing is that?! Very freeing for me. :) Thank you Bob for the hundreds and probably thousands of paintings that you left behind and for inspiring me so greatly.

'Shedding' To Become Clear

Hello All,
I've recently discovered a book that will hopefully help me to get clearer about the next phase of my art path and possibly many other things in the process. The book is titled - 'Shed Your Stuff, Change Your Life' by Julie Morgenstern. In this wonderful book, the author takes you through a four-step process that helps you to free up areas of your life that are no longer serving you and ultimately anchoring you in your current state. She points out that for every major transition in our lives (new job, moving into a new home, leaving a relationship, etc.), we ultimately need to do some 'shedding' of the anchors from our current reality in order to move forward. If you feel stuck, unfocused, unclear, and just not sure what to do next, then this book may just be for you. Julie Morgenstern helps you to look at the physical anchors, time wasting anchors, and ultimately the habit anchors that you may be allowing to sabatoge your every move.

Do you as an artist, creator, inventor, chef, entrepreneur, etc. feel that something is just not as it should be? Do you ever feel like perhaps you're slogging through quicksand to achieve your goals? I'd love to hear from you and if you have or are dealing with these very issues, please feel free to share! What tools have worked for you? Your tools just might work for many others as well!

What Are The Unorthodox 'Tools' Of Your Trade?

In this post, I'd like to talk about the tools that we use to create our artwork. I'm always fascinated by other artist's processes and the tools they use. What I really enjoy is when I learn how to use a tool or item that I've not thought of using before. I remember reading a few years back about how you can use old credit and debit cards for moving the paint around in your abstract artwork. I LOVED that idea for some reason. It was like a way to recycle something and make it last a little longer versus destroying it because it had expired.

So I'd like to ask you what tools do you use that aren't normally used in the way you use them? Again, I'm talking to all types of artists here. It doesn't matter if you are a writer, painter, seamstress, or hobnail creator (is there such a person?), I'd love to hear about the tools you use that might be unorthodox in how you use them.

Since reading the credit card idea I have a few cards that I keep handy and do use them in creating some of my paintings. Another thing I keep handy is lids of all shapes and sizes and especially the deep white plastic ones. I love to use these as mini painting pallets while I'm painting. Plus they are easy for me to clean up since I paint primarily with acrylic paints. If the paint dries I can either easily scrape it out of the lid or let it soak a bit in water and its even easier to remove. I also like how they are large enough for the colors I'm working on at the time yet small enough so that I can cover them with another lid to keep my paints from drying out so quickly. Yeah, it's the simple things that make me happy. :)

How Do You Price Your Artwork?

It seems that this topic has been coming up more and more of late and I thought I'd take it to the artists and readers to get feedback. I think it's another of those topics that makes each creative type wince when they first start placing their creations in the market place.

I'm really interested in how you formulate or determine the price you charge for the things that you've created no matter what that might be. Of course I definitely want to hear from other artists but I know that when I've created other things in the past besides my paintings I came up against this very same situation. How to price my items to sell!

I've noticed that some artists can charge a certain price for their paintings and inwardly I'm thinking "OH MY GOODNESS! How did they arrive at THAT price?!!" :) I both admire them and am wondering at the same time when I'll ever feel confident enough in my artwork to put THAT kind of price tag on it.

Talking with artists over the years I've heard many different formulas as to how they each arrived at their final price guide for their paintings. I'd like to hear how YOU determine your prices for your artwork, craft or creations of any kind. Do you feel good about the prices you are asking? Do you feel that you are short changing yourself with the prices you ask? Or do you feel strongly confident in your prices and if so how did you get to that place? I'd really love it if you would share your process.

How Do You Promote Your Artwork?

I'd like to talk about promoting our artwork today and I'm wondering how you as an artist go about it. Do you promote your artwork and yourself every day? Or do you casually work it into a conversation every now and then?

I have a feeling that most artists aren't comfortable with the self promotion side of the art business. At least it seems to be that way from the artists I've talked with. Some are better at it than others for sure. But for the most part, it seems like the business side of our artwork and specifically the promotional part is our least favorite aspect of the art business. If we don't promote our artwork and creativity then how will others know about it? Listing it on our websites or our blogs is a great way to get the word out but is it enough? It is if the ones that are looking to buy artwork manage to find you online.

I'd love to hear how you promote the things you create whether it be your paintings, photos, things you sew, or whatever. The thing you do just might be the one thing I need to do next to let people know about my artwork. :)

Creating Something Every Day!

So my paintings are now in the Old Town Custom Framing & Gallery in Silverdale, WA that I mentioned in my last post and just in time for the monthly Friday Art Walk! The art walk is from 6:00 until 8:00 pm and includes several stores in Silverdale. I'm all excited and looking forward to hearing feedback on how my paintings are being received by the public.

Today I'd like to ask how many of you create something everyday? Why should we do this you ask? Primarily, I feel it is important to create something each day to help us stay in that creative flow. If we don't recognize that there is a discipline involved with being creative we may find that our creative urge has flown out the door and dwindled down to little or nothing at all. We are well aware that if we don't use our muscles that they will atrophy and cease to serve us. I feel the same can be said about our creativity! We must use it or loose it.

What are some ways that you incorporate creativity in your daily life? Are you creative when you do your chores? Do you try new recipes occasionally and add your own flare to your food when you cook? Do you sit down with pen and paper and let the tension flow out of your body and simply doodle? When was the last time you attempted to create something outside your usual realm of creativity? I'd love to hear from you!

Finding Inspiration

As an artist and painter, it is my job to be inspired so that I can convey my inspirations onto canvas, paper, or whatever other medium I'm working in at the moment. How do artists, writers, crafters, etc. stay inspired in order to turn out prolific amounts of artwork?

I'm very amazed when I come across an artist that is turning out paintings every single day. That alone inspires and intrigues me. How do they do it? Artists are people with daily hum drum lives just like anyone else. They don't automatically wake up and always know what they are going to paint that day. Some do I'm sure but they are the exceptional few. :)

When I transitioned from Corporate America in 2007 to being a full time Artist I was confronted with the inspiration process. At first I set out to create a painting a day as several artists do. Then I found that I had too many things I liked to create other than painting so I gave up on that discipline. Now I find that the need to paint is always there within me and is hovering, waiting to be set free. Sometimes I need something to help it to leap out and onto canvas.

Some things I do to release the inspiration within me are -
   Look at other artist's work
     Try to learn a new process or style of artwork
     Look at older paintings I've finished and might
   do again
   Take a walk in nature
     Listen to my favorite music

What things do you do when you need inspiration? I'd love to hear about your process!

On a different note, last week a friend and fellow artist nudged me to take some of my artwork to one of our local galleries. She has had her artwork there and knows the owner, Maria Mackovjak. For some reason the timing seemed right and I didn't let my fear of rejection get in the way. I'm very happy to say that Maria loved many of my pieces that I took in and I will now be one of the artists at the Old Town Custom Framing & Gallery! I'll be taking in several of my paintings that are on canvas panels, some on art paper, and one larger painting on canvas just as soon as I get everything organized.

Unleash Your Creative Potential

Hello Everyone!

I came across an article that I'd like to share with you. I feel it captures many of the things we need to be aware of in order to unleash our creative potential.. Many people have told me over the years that they could never paint or create something as I had. This statement would usually come on the heels of them saying something like "Oh I wish I could paint like that!" It is my firm belief that if you have a strong desire for doing a thing such as painting, then you definitely have the potential to do it! How will you know if you don't give it a try? You could be the next biggest thing to land on the art scene!!

Here is an excerpt from the article by Ron Huxley - "People seem to have the misconception that only a select few are able to unleash a steady flow of creative genius. That is not true at all. The fact is, creativity is very much like a muscle that needs to be exercised in order to consistently give out great results. If you don’t practice harnessing creative thinking, this skill will very much atrophy into nonexistence. But keep working and this skill will soon come to you in a snap."

Those that know me know that I MUST do something creative each day. It is a drive that I can not ignore. Whether it be writing, sewing, painting, drawing or learning something totally new and crafty, I must do something each day! If I don't, then it is like the very life force is draining out of me. I start to feel edgy and dull and like my battery is running low.

I'd love to hear what you do to unleash your creative potential.
Are there certain things that you do each day that help you to open to the creative flow?
Do you perhaps doodle while listening to someone talking or have you tried doing a quick sketch before retiring at night? What do you do to feed that part of your soul that must be fed on a daily basis?

Todays Word Is 'FOCUS'!

Hello Everyone,
It seems like the theme of 'focus' has been getting in my face more and more of late. Today I've found it almost impossible to stay focused! So many things coming at me from every direction. These aren't negative things mind you, but they are distracting to say the least. :)

I'm very grateful for all the wonderful things that have been coming my way. It seems that all I have to do is think about a thing and BLAMO! it's right there in front of me! Funny how that works.

Have you noticed this happening more and more in your world? I'd love to hear about your experiences of focus or lack there of. :)

Releasing Clutter To Free Up Creativity

Just after Christmas and before the new year, I found myself going into a spring cleaning frenzy. I've learned from my past track record that I probably need to stay with these frenzies as long as possible because I never know when another creative project will yank me away.

I did allow myself to get yanked away but not before I managed to go through several items and boxes and donate, donate, donate! I also managed to organize some of my creative spaces before switching gears as well. Oh how freeing it was. I felt myself being able to breathe again and that familiar creative tickle became stronger and stronger. I'll finish all that I set out to do, but for now it feels much better.

Another interesting thing I found is that the more I gave away, the more weight I began to lose! :)

How does releasing and de-cluttering affect your creativity? And if you don't do these things and you feel that you need to, do you find your creativity shutting down?

And how it will look in a black mat frame.

Here is another painting from the Intuitive Abstract Painting process and this one is titled "Waters Of Life No. 3". I think I'm going to leave the original just as it is for now. I might play with layering it digitally to see what other affects I can achieve at some point. For now I'm just going to enjoy how the different colors and brush strokes seem to dance and play on the paper.

This painting is 5" x 7" and it is painted with acrylic paint on heavily primed art paper front and back.

Waters Of Life Series Number 2 Painting

Here is another painting from the Intuitive Abstract Painting Process I posted about recently. My intention was to try and capture an Asian feel to this one. The markings at the top of the painting are supposed to be Chinese calligraphy. Not sure if that comes across to everyone else or not. :)

This painting is acrylic paints on primed (front and back) art paper to give it structure. I used different strokes, washes, and tools to create what you see here and on the others I'll be listing. The size of this painting is slightly larger than 5" x 5".

I've enjoyed having these paintings surrounding me and I may leave some just as they are without adding anything to them. They would make such a lovely grouping. Most of the individual paintings ended up being 5" x 7" so will be very easy to frame.

My goal is to start a web site to place my original paintings for sale there. I'll keep you posted as I get closer to that point.

Waters Of Life Series Number 1 Painting

After much deliberation I decided where my first cut would be in the big abstract background painting I posted about in my last post. Each place that I put the frame seemed like the perfect painting just waiting to be set free. So I had to just take the plunge and make that first cut.

I used a 5 x 7 template and lightly traced around it with a pencil and then cut out that section of the painting. Then I set to work adding some trees and a few other light washes of paint here and there. Now it looks like an abstract landscape and I just love the colors and placement of each brush stroke.

The title of the series seemed to float effortlessly up in my mind as I was finishing the larger background painting. Then, as I worked on this painting I knew for certain that it had to be named the Waters Of Life series. I love the combination of colors and how they work with each other. The entire painting is done using acrylic paints. Acrylics are so versatile in that you can make water color effects and use very lovely washes on top of the thicker brush strokes. Olive green, turquoise blue, and burnt sienna are the primary colors in this series with touches of a few other colors here and there. I may have to do another series with these colors!

Intuitive Abstract Painting Process

Hello Everyone!

I've been on a spring cleaning and organizing kick of late and have been very anxious to get to a place so that I could start working on some of the Intuitive Collage Art that I shared with you a few posts ago. Being inspired by Martha Marshall on her Artists Journal Blog where she talks about her Three Part Process there, I decided to give it a shot.

The interesting thing is that I've fallen in love with the background I was preparing for the collage and will have to do the collage part at another time. :)

Here are a few shots of what I've painted thus far on a large piece of art paper.

Using Martha's view finder process I'll place the mat frame around the larger painting and determine where I'd like to capture each smaller painting. The possibilities are just endless when you start framing out the areas from different angles!

The challenge for me at this point is deciding exactly where to cut out the smaller paintings! I do plan on adding more painting and some details to each piece once I've narrowed down the focus a bit. At this point the plan is to cut out several 5 x 7 size pieces and possibly some 4 x 6 pieces that will be easily framed. I'm still in the planning and experimenting stage so we'll see how it progresses!

Once each painting is complete I'll be able to scan the smaller sizes on the scanner and you'll be able to see the colors and patterns much more true. I'm thinking these will make a lovely series and grouping. Hopefully the names of the series and each painting will start to come to me as I finish each one.
